The bond between man and machine is something that we can’t really explain in words. Provided the conditions are right the two create a beautiful harmony of which the results are very wonderful things. One of such machines is our automobiles which we use almost every day for transportation. Some of us have a special kind of love for our automobiles and so treat them like our offspring, caring about each and every little aspect of them and making sure they run in pristine condition, and tires happen to be a very important aspect of them. Without tires, our automobiles are nothing but very heavy engines capable of producing only smoke and noise, but with tires the result is something beautiful. Today we look at one of the oldest tire manufacturers in the world, Continental Tires.

The birthplace of Continental was in Hanover in 1871, it came into being as the stock corporation “Continental-Caoutchou-und Gutta-Percha Compagnie”. They made soft rubber products, rubberized fabrics and solid tires that were then used for carriages and bicycles and such. But as time progressed so did the company and in 1898 it achieved initial success in creating the automobile pneumatic tires with a plain tread. And in 1904 the company was the first to make grooved tires for automobiles, and just a year later rivet anti-skid tires came into being. Different types of tires were then developed over the years and in 1920 it merged with major companies in the rubber industry to for Continental Gummi-Werke AG. In 1951 the company started producing steel cord conveyor belts, and in 1955 they became the first company to make air springs for trucks and buses. In 1960 they came out with belted tires and 30 years later the first environmentally friendly tires for passenger cars hit the market. They were one of the first company to present one of the key technologies for hybrid cars in 1997 and currently it is one of the top 5 tire companies in the world. Currently they make tires for different sorts of automobiles such as passenger cars, SUVs, trucks and vans and these tires are then further divided based on the seasons of their use, they also makes tires based on performance such as sports tires, touring tires and normal passenger tires. Continental has developed self repairing tires and kits used for tire repair that can be used to seal different things.

So that was a short history of one of the biggest tire manufacturers in the world, now you are equipped with the knowledge of the history and innovations of at least one of the tire companies in the market right now as we speak. This will help you making a purchase next time so you know the company is legitimate or at least you now have some interesting facts to discuss with your friends and could be used as an ice breaker with car enthusiasts. Remember to always take care of your car, specially tires and always drive safe.
