One of the best things in life are automobiles, manmade machine capable of getting you from one place to another at incredible speeds all the while providing you best of comfort. All of that is possible because of tires because if there were no tires made then all the technological advancements would not have been made which led us to the invention of automobiles. In fact, one of the key forces that give you a smooth ride in your automobile of choice, be it a motorcycle or a car or a truck or even a bicycle, are good tires. And one the biggest and most diverse companies in the world are Michelin tires, let’s take a look at how they came to be and what they have done so far.

The actual roots of the company were laid down back in 1189 by tow brothers Eduouard Michelin and Andre Michelin who ran a rubber factory in France, but the actual ball that started the real Michelin tire company was rolled in 1891 when the company took out its first patent for the removable pneumatic tire. In the 1920s and 1930s a large number or rubber plantations were being operated under Michelin in Vietnam and the conditions of these plantations later led to the famous labor movement Phu Riend Do. In 1934 Michelin innovated a special tire which used a particular type of foam lining which allowed it to run even if punctured. In 11946 they innovated and patented one of the most revolutionary tires in history, the radial tire, which led to further innovations from dozen other tire companies in the world throughout history. In 1968, Michelin opened for sales in North America and by 1989 they had 10% market shares for OEM tires purchased by American automobile manufacturers. In 1970 it received the contract for the Lincoln Continental Mark 3 the first American car with Radial tires which were fitted as standard. In 1989 it took over the firms B.F. Goodrich Company and Uniroyal, Inc. Michelin currently controls 90% of the Taurus Tire in Hungary as well as Kormoran which is a Polish brand. As of September 1st 2008, the company is again the world’s largest tire manufacturer after it had spent two years as number two behind the giant Bridgestone. Michelin makes tires for all sorts of vehicles and applications such as tires for cars, motorbikes, bicycles, trucks and tractors, heavy machinery and even airplanes. It also has the world famous mascot named the Michelin Man.

So that was a short history of Michelin how it came to be and what innovations it has brought into the world and how it inspired others. Now you know the basics of all you need to know about the largest tire maker in the world, you can use this knowledge to ahead and impress all your automobile enthusiast friends and even your mechanic. Always remember to make sure that your tires are in good condition and aren’t damaged, follow the laws of the road, and drive safe.
