We all love our vehicles, no matter if they’re as simple as a moped or as epic as a Lamborghini I can say this with utmost confidence that we all love those vehicles. Since we love them we take great care of them by taking them to the mechanic or if we’re proficient ourselves we try and fix them personally, and make sure that they’re spotless. Now if I asked you that what’s one of the top most important components of a vehicle, you’d say an engine right? But there is actually another part that without it that engine is practically useless, being nothing more than a machine that creates a lot of noise and smoke. That important part is called a tire, 4 of them to be exact and today we talk about one of the biggest tire makers in the world.

Today we talk about the company Pirelli, it is a multinational company based in Milan, Italy which is one the biggest and most famous fashion hubs of the world. Pirelli is the fifth largest tire manufacturer after Bridgestone, Michelin, Continental and Goodyear. It has a presence in over 160 countries. It started off in Milan in the year 1872 by Giovanni Battista Pirelli, in the start the company specialized in rubber and derivative processes and also made rebreathers that are used in scuba diving. But afterwards the company’s focus shifted to the production of tires and cables which were used for energy and telecommunications purposes, the cable division was later sold to Goldman Sachs in the year 2005 which then prompted the new group’s change of name to Prysmian. In the era of 1950s, Alberto Pirelli commission the building of famous skyscraper in Milan, which was housed in the same are that housed the very first Pirelli factory back in the 19th century, for their offices and such. In the year of 1974, a major breakthrough for Pirelli as it invented the ‘wide Radial tire’ after being requested from the Lancia rally racing team, as conventional radial tires could not withstand the power of the Lancia Stratos. Subsequently, Porsche started using the same tires for the car that would be one of its famous models the 911 Turbo. In 1988, Pirelli took over the Connecticut based Armstrong Rubber Company for $190 Million. In 2002 the company launched a line of branded clothing, watches and eyewear. In March of 2015, Pirelli shareholders accepted a bid of 7.1 billion Euro from the ChemChina company effectively delisting off the Milan Stock Market.

As mentioned before, it is the 5th largest tire manufacturer in the world. It has received tons of sponsorships for various racing events and its tires have been seen in racing movies like Fast and Furious and Need for Speed. So there it is folks, a brief ‘all you need to know’ account of the company Pirelli, you can now impress your other enthusiast acquaintances and friends from what you learnt here. Follow the rules of the road and drive safe.
